Patient Allergic to Anesthetic Takes Legal Action

As a dentist, it’s crucial to consider your patient’s allergies before starting treatment. Lack of caution could lead to malpractice. 

In this case study, a patient allergic to maraschino cherries visits a dentist for a composite restoration. The dentist uses a topical anesthetic containing red dye #40 to prepare for treatment. After the dentist leaves, the patient tells the assistant that she is not feeling well and is struggling to breathe. While the assistant calls 911, the dentist attempts to support oxygenation by way of an external feed of oxygen, opening the airway, and mouth-to-mouth breathing. An ambulance takes the patient to the hospital. Later, the patient claims cognitive deficits due to having lacked oxygen and accuses the dentist of negligence.
